Why a fridge is not regular bulky waste

Refrigerators contain refrigerant in a sealed system, and so do freezers, wine coolers, mini fridges, ice makers and air conditioners. That refrigerant has to be recovered by someone certified to do it before the unit can be scrapped or landfilled. This is a legal requirement, not a courtesy.

Practically, that means a refrigerator cannot be treated like a sofa. Some LA-area bulky-item programs handle them with separate rules, some route them differently, and an informal scrap collector working a block in a pickup truck is not the right destination for one. It also means any hauler who takes a fridge should be able to tell you how the refrigerant is handled.

Option one: the retailer delivering the new one

Cheapest path, and it has to be arranged at purchase. Most appliance retailers will haul the old unit away with the delivery, included or for a small fee, if you tick the box at checkout. Afterwards is too late.

Verify the access scope. Delivery crews work to a defined scope and a third-floor walk-up in a Koreatown courtyard building or a hillside house in Highland Park with thirty steps down to the street is often outside it. Ask before delivery day, not on it.

Option two: a utility recycling program

If the refrigerator still runs, this is worth checking first. California utilities have long operated programs designed to retire old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers — the second fridge humming away in a Reseda garage is exactly the target — and they typically arrange collection and sometimes pay an incentive.

Eligibility and terms change, and which utility serves you depends on which city inside the county you are in. Look up your own utility's current appliance recycling page. The usual requirement is that the unit works and is plugged in when they arrive.

Option three: your city's bulky pickup

The City of Los Angeles and each independent city — Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank — runs its own bulky-item collection with its own rules for appliances. Refrigerant-containing units frequently have separate handling requirements attached.

You request a date and the unit has to be at the curb or alley by a set hour. That is workable on a flat Valley street and difficult everywhere else: a Venice walk street, a canyon road with no shoulder, or a Mount Washington house that sits below the pavement. Check your own city's current bulky-item page.

Option four: flat-price pickup

A standard refrigerator is $164. A side-by-side or French door is $183. A built-in or Sub-Zero — common in Westside remodels and along the Wilshire Corridor — is $238. A commercial glass-door merchandiser is $316. A mini fridge is $115. A chest freezer is $146, an upright freezer is $149.

Refrigerant recovery, the carry from any floor, and disposal are all included. There is no refrigerant fee, no stair charge and no long-carry fee. The visit minimum is $75, and a refrigerator is well above it on its own.

Most kitchen jobs combine. A refrigerator and an electric range together is $164 + $134 = $298. A full kitchen appliance swap with refrigerator, electric range and dishwasher is $164 + $134 + $109 = $407. A garage clear that takes out the old second fridge and the chest freezer is $164 + $146 = $310.

Prep the night before

Empty it completely and unplug it. Defrost the freezer compartment overnight with the doors propped and towels underneath, because frost melts the moment the unit is tilted, and meltwater running down the exterior stair of a Palms dingbat is somebody's problem — usually yours.

Shut the water valve and disconnect the ice maker line before the appointment, not during. A line disconnected under tension parts at the fitting and sprays a kitchen.

Tape the doors closed for the move, or remove them if the unit has been sitting empty and unpowered somewhere children can reach it.

Getting it through an LA doorway

A standard refrigerator is roughly 33 to 36 inches wide. Interior doorways in a 1926 courtyard apartment in Los Feliz or a Spanish fourplex in West Adams are frequently narrower than that once the trim and the stop are counted. Doors come off the refrigerator and sometimes the hinge pins come out of the door frame.

Then the stairwell. The half-landing turn in those buildings is the real obstacle, and a refrigerator on a dolly does not pivot in place. This is why refrigerator removal is a two-person job every single time and why the delivery crew's definition of ground-floor access matters so much.

None of it changes what you pay. A refrigerator is $164 on the third floor and $164 in a driveway.

What to do with a working fridge

A working refrigerator under about eight years old has real resale value in Los Angeles, especially stainless. List it with honest photos and be blunt about the stairs — a buyer who agrees to come to Echo Park and then finds thirty-one public steps will cancel from the car.

Some reuse charities take working appliances, with strict standards and pickup lead times commonly running two to four weeks. And if it is an old working unit in a garage, check the utility program before you scrap it. If none of that fits your deadline, the flat price resolves it in one appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does refrigerator removal cost in Los Angeles?

A standard refrigerator is $164, a side-by-side or French door is $183, and a built-in or Sub-Zero is $238. A mini fridge is $115. Refrigerant handling, carry-out from any floor and disposal are all included.

Can I put a refrigerator at the curb in LA?

Only if your own city's bulky-item program accepts it and you have a scheduled date. Refrigerant-containing units often have separate requirements. Check your city's current page rather than assuming.

Do you charge a freon fee?

No. Certified refrigerant recovery is part of the published price. There is no separate environmental or refrigerant surcharge.

What do I need to do before you arrive?

Empty it, unplug it, defrost the freezer overnight with towels down, and shut off and disconnect the ice maker water line. That is all.

It will not fit through my apartment door. Is that a problem?

No. Doors come off the unit and it is handled on site at no extra charge. Narrow doorways and half-landing stair turns are the normal case in LA's 1920s buildings.

My old fridge still works. Is there a better option?

Possibly. Check your utility's current appliance recycling program — those exist specifically to retire working but inefficient units, and some pay an incentive. Resale is also strong in LA for stainless units under about eight years old.
